Character Information

Character Name: Junpei Tenmyouji
Canon: Zero Escape series
Canon Point: Prior to the events of Zero Time Dilemma

History: Wiki Link

Personality: At his canon point, Junpei has changed quite a bit from the Junpei from the first game. He falls into depression after finding out that the world is not as kind or as just as he originally thought. Darker aspects of himself come to light, though the foundations of who he is remain the same.

As a child, Junpei loved playing the hero, and as much as he denies it, he still aspires to protect those weaker than himself. When he is alone, Junpei has no purpose, and he unravels. He is at his best when someone else is relying on him, and he can find the strength to do whatever needs to be done. This can be a positive influence, like when he refuses to leave behind a member of the group at the 9/q door near the end of the 999. He also adopts and protects an orphaned child in the future apocalypse, and does everything in his power to make sure Quark is equipped to survive after his death. However, this protective streak turns darker when faced with a situation where he must choose between the person he is protecting and anyone else.

Seeing himself as unremarkable, Junpei prioritizes others above himself. That is not to say he isn’t selfish, because he always has a hierarchy of importance in his head, and he is willing to let others die to keep the most important people safe. The ‘most important person’ is just never himself. During the events of Zero Time Dilemma, he is the team member advocating for betraying the other teams to save their own team. Once enough time fragments are unlocked, however, it is revealed that Junpei’s true goal is to make sure Akane makes it out alive, even at the expense of his own life. After spending a few hours with Carlos and learning he is trustworthy, he also ranks Carlos higher than himself in his mind; when game mechanics dictate that one person must die for the other two to escape, Junpei runs off on his own, planning to sacrifice himself for the other two’s freedom. He is also willing to sacrifice himself in another way- by offering to be the one to betray the other groups, because he knows his teammates will not.

In terms of intelligence, Junpei is not especially book-smart and does not bring a lot of knowledge to the table, but he is good at connecting pieces of a puzzle. This is more than navigating puzzle rooms, Junpei is able to figure out characters’ motivations and secrets. He works for a year as a private investigator, during which time he uncovers many horrific crimes and even helps locate the headquarters of the cult that (later in the timeline) threatens the world. While he is not a genius like Akane or Light Fields, he manages well enough with his brain.

Junpei thinks he is tougher than he actually is. Junpei gets straight-up murdered by four different characters in the series, and is never able to fend off their attacks. He stands up to his middle school bullies (to avenge murdered rabbits) and gets his ass handed to him. He claims he was able to threaten and intimidate his way into the Mars Mission Test Site (to go propose to his childhood crush); it is later revealed that the experiment was being controlled by Delta, who specifically set up the mission to lure all the participants there. Junpei ends up ‘fighting’ Carlos, who has to fake-assault Akane to provoke Junpei for plot reasons, and Carlos shakes off Junpei’s punches like nothing. His newly adopted tough and edgy persona is at least 80% an act to protect himself from having has his world-view rocked by Akane’s disappearance and the discovery of evil in the world. Partially because he is not physically strong enough, partially because he doesn’t have an emotional capacity for true violence, Junpei only kills others by using the Ally/Betray mechanics of the game, and always does so to protect either Akane or Quark.

When the world does not operate on principles of fairness or justice, Junpei has a hard time coping. He can stay composed when there are rules that are being followed and there seems to be a chance of escape. When presented with the idea that ‘Life is simply unfair’, and he will be killed because of a coin flip or a dice roll rather than by a puzzle he can solve, Junpei can’t accept it. Even after supposedly renouncing his optimistic beliefs, he is still noticeably shaken when he is faced with impossible odds and fails, because deep inside, he believes in justice that will allow good people to win and bad people to be punished. This does not stop him from trying to cheat at times, because ‘good’ is subjective and sometimes even heroes have to think outside of the box.

When there is something Junpei wants, he can be stubborn in his pursuit of it. In 999, this presents itself as Junpei tricking his way down the paths he wants to go on. At his current point, he has followed Akane to Nevada and threatened some scientists because he refuses to let Akane go without getting another chance to talk to her. When he doesn’t get his way (because Akane ignores him when they meet back up), Junpei gets petulant and starts deliberately needling her to get attention. He also tends to have trouble communicating his feelings. This is played off humorously in the first game, when he interprets Akane’s conversations as innuendo, but becomes a source of frustration in the third game, when he finds himself unable to confess to Akane despite having been reunited with her. He spends multiple (separate) dying moments cradling the ring he bought Akane but was unable to give to her.

On a lighter note, no matter what sort of situation Junpei is in, he can never resist making a dumb joke or purposefully misinterpreting suggestive phrasing. Sometimes, he deliberately chooses to say stupid things to help lighten a tense mood, but mostly it is because he can’t help himself. He is humorous, though the people around him probably would draw the line at calling him ‘funny’. He also lets himself celebrate victories even in the oppressive atmosphere of the puzzle rooms, chugging a beer or doing a goofy victory dance when he passes a particularly daunting obstacle.

Items on your character at canon point:
-Clothes (black t-shirt, dark jeans, sneakers, a black leather jacket)
-A wallet, filled with (a sadly small amount of) American currency, but Japanese IDs.
-A pad of paper and a pen.
-One cheap engagement ring
-A flask, empty.

Abilities:
-Junpei is canonically fluent in Japanese and English.
-He can SUDOKU. It’s a life-saving skill sometimes.
-Puzzle-solving. He’s the kind of person who needs to have all of the puzzle pieces to solve a mystery, but once he does, he’s good to go. The Zero Escape games are basically a series of escape rooms, and Junpei is always able to find the answers and progress. In between the first and third game, he also spends a year as a Private Investigator.
-SHIFTing. Ok, here’s the complicated one. The Zero Escape games are built around characters’ ability to access the Morphogenetic Fields. These ESPers have the ability to send or receive information to one another, or to themselves in different timelines, when faced with life-threatening situations. At Junpei’s canon point, he has done this one time, and does not have the ability to do it at will. Another character who SHIFTs more regularly experiences it as an instinct that leads him to avoid the path that leads to death. Because of the potential game-breaking nature of this ability, I do not plan to develop it further without mod approval. If anything, for Junpei, he may experience a sense of déjà vu about a situation where he escapes death (because, in an alternate timeline, things went differently and he died there).

If you have questions or need me to clarify further about these powers, just let me know.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

+ Loyal – Junpei very much has an ‘us vs. them’ mentality. As seen below, this can lead him to take advantage of others or even leave them to die, but more positively, one someone is on Junpei’s ‘team’, he is willing to sacrifice anything, even his own life, to keep them safe. There is a hierarchy of importance for Junpei, and he never puts himself at the top of it.

+ Humorous – He ranks it as a weakness (“And that’s why I have no friends.”), but Junpei’s
tendency to crack stupid jokes tends to help relax others during tense situations. Sometimes he uses it purposefully to try to lighten the mood, and sometimes, the joke is just so irresistibly bad that he can’t help himself.

+ Protective- Junpei is at his best when he has someone to protect. In his younger days, it was Akane, and later on, it was his adopted grandson, Quark. When left to his own devices, Junpei has no direction. His life between 999 and ZTD is a drunken spiral. Having someone to take care of gives Junpei purpose, and he becomes braver, stronger, and more driven. When he was younger, he was one of those kids who aspired to be a shonen hero. At his current canon point, he claims to have given up on being the hero, but still, as soon as Akane is hurt, he leaps to protect her.

+ Clever- While not the smartest person in the series, Junpei is able to solve the puzzles and mysteries he is presented with. He is able to figure out the various motivations of the people around him and convince them (or trick them) to work toward his goals. He is able to solve a basic Sudoku puzzle, even if it is upside down. Such talent.

- Impulsive/Reckless- Junpei focuses on the short-term, rushing in without bothering to think of an exit strategy. As a child, when a group of older kids killed the rabbits he and Akane were taking care of, he went and confronted them on his own, which ended up with him getting his ass kicked. He doesn’t ever learn his lesson, and doesn’t stop to consider safety, and it’s a pattern that continues throughout his life.

- Selfish- When asked to sentence six acquaintances to die to save two closer friends, Junpei is willing to do it. He will lie and betray to serve his ends, and leave others trapped to get his loved ones to safety.

- Unable to Communicate- Junpei has a hard time saying how he really feels. This leads to a lot of frustration with Akane because he can’t find the words to tell her how hurt he was when she left, instead deflecting with jokes and taunts.

-Fragile- He gets injured so often, and he is never able to protect himself. When left to his own devices, he is physically unable to fend off attacks, and emotionally unable to cope with the harsh realities of the world without trying to drown himself in a bottle. Junpei tries to act tough, but he is a mess unless he has someone to hold him together.
